Bulky book paper has a high "bulk": it is thick and voluminous for a low grammage. A book gains thickness and reading comfort without gaining weight. Prodiconseil, a French paper merchant since 1991, stocks it for publishing, in reels and sheets.
High opacity, a pleasant feel and an often restful ivory shade: bulky paper is the paper of the novel, the paperback and everyday publishing. Its bulk allows a thick spine with few pages and controlled shipping weight — with volumes available immediately, without waiting for a mill production run.

What is the "bulk" of a paper?
Bulk is the ratio of thickness to grammage: a high-bulk paper is thick for a given weight. A 70 gsm bulky paper can be as thick as a 90 gsm offset. That is what gives a book volume without weight.
Why choose bulky paper for a book?
For spine thickness (a thin book feels more substantial), reading comfort (opacity, a soft ivory shade) and reduced shipping weight. It is the standard of literary publishing.
